Comments are On

I?ve finally gotten around to adding a way to enter comments on this Blog. I?ve been reading a lot of other blogs lately and it does seem that most people get nice comments, not nasty ones (partly what I?m afraid of!)? but after all, what sort of controversy could the Yarn Harlot excite, really? I?ve sort of wimped out and made it conditional whether the comments show or not. They get e-mailed to me and then I get to accept or reject them. So if you comment on the weekend, it likely won?t get posted until Monday because I?m in a habit of not looking at my email on weekends!

This is not so much because I expect to get tons of nasty comments, but more to protect the site against getting Spammed. Being a web developer I see this sort of thing happen more often than you think and I?ve had to take down more than one ?guestbook? due to inappropriate behaviour ? casino links, nekked pictures, bad language, you name it. To that end I?ve also disallowed HTML, but since I get to approve the comments anyway I should probably allow links at least. (Meh ? maybe later.)

Now that I?ve set this up, I guess my biggest fear is not that I?ll get nasty comments but that I?ll get NO COMMENTS AT ALL!! I need validation! Is anyone out there reading this?

Hellooooo??

RSS Feed Now Available for Bloggy Goodness

My blog now has an RSS Feed! Check it out. If you have an RSS enabled browser like Firefox, click on the orange icon in the lower right corner of your browser window to subscribe to my feed. If I've done it right, the last five articles posted should appear in your bookmarks.

Yay! I learned something new today.

Bloggy Blogness

I?ve been playing with this blog tool as I go, in between working on paying projects.

One new feature is in the side menu where you can click on a topic heading to bring up entries under that heading, 5 at a time (in theory). Since I don?t have very many entries yet it?s kind of hard to test, hah. Once I DO have a bunch of entries I?ll be adding some sort of archive feature to this by date.

Another thing I?ll be doing soon is adding some links to the side bar. The very first one I add will be to www.frankie.ca/blog/, soon to become www.cobolhacker.com. The site belongs to a friend who I think has some good stuff to say about computer culture, plus he?s usually pretty funny.

There are a lot of great blogging tools out there and I probably did not need to create my own but I did it anyhow because I am kind of a PHP/MySQL nerd and I thought it would be fun to do. Over time with the number of database-driven websites I?ve worked on I?m starting to develop quite the little library of functions. Not to say that I?m really good at it. It seems like every time I fix something (on some sites) I manage to break something else. Fortunately most of my clients are really patient, and if I?ve screwed up I fix it immediately, for free of course!

One thing I have never attempted to build is a thread-based forum. Maybe that will be my next personal project, then you can tell me what you REALLY think.

Bloggy Goodness, Indeed!

Firstly here?s something about me, so you know who you?re dealing with:

I?m a 40-something female who works from home as a website developer. I?m happily married to a great guy, Redman*, and I have two step sons, Derwood, 13 going on 8, and Zack, 15 going on 25. I live in a small city in Canada which I think is the greatest country on Earth, and vote Liberal or NDP as the occasion warrants but NEVER Conservative. I also have a Fine Arts degree, enjoy doing handwork like knitting and needlepoint which saves my sanity and my pet peeve is people who don?t pick up after themselves, especially their SOCKS. I love reading, good movies, and watching just about anything on the Food channel (except ?Top 5? and ?Emeril?). I am a self-proclaimed geek which means I also like shows like Buffy, Star Trek and CSI.

*All names changed to protect anonymity.

Secondly, why I don?t have a feedback/comment form:

OK, this is my ?blog and I make the rules. I?m not really doing this to invite dialog. This is where I get to post my thoughts, observations and opinions. Other people can post their own opinions on their own ?blogs. Some of the things I might post here might cheese some people off, I?m well aware of that. But if you don?t happen to agree with what I write, making attacks upon my personal belief system isn?t likely to persuade me to your point of view. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but think twice about sharing yours with me if all you are going to do is call me a terrible person because I don?t think the same way you do. I?ve read enough ?threads? on enough online forums to know how these things degenerate into mudslinging.

If you MUST contact me, you can send a note to happyblogger@bloggy-goodness.com, but be warned that I won?t even bother to read posts that contain ALL CAPITOL LETTERS, or which berate me for not agreeing with your political views or religious beliefs or your moral code, etc. If you disagree with a movie or book review or want to give constructive criticism on my writing style or even offer friendly advice on a dilemma I?m facing, I?m happy to read and possibly respond to intelligent comments, but please, no personal attacks. Also, be warned that I?m a confirmed atheist, so please no proselytising for your favourite deity, you?d be wasting your time anyway.

Compliments, of course, are always welcome. No one gets enough of those in a lifetime, I say.

P.S. I wrote the code for this Blogging tool, if you ask nicely I will share it FREE to anyone who wants, but you must be somewhat familiar with PHP and MySQL. Other than some intital instructions there is no technical support, sorry.
